Selsdon is a hilltop suburb in the south east of Croydon, built largely between the wars on what had been farmland. It still has a village feel, with shops along Addington Road and roads of family houses that run down to the edge of the woods. Selsdon Wood, a nature reserve owned by the National Trust and managed by Croydon Council, marks the boundary with the countryside towards Farleigh. It is a quiet, settled place.

Most Selsdon events are private or community ones: birthdays, garden parties, school fairs and church fêtes. Houses here often have driveways and decent gardens, which makes life easier, but some roads are on a slope.
