Risk assessment
Definition
A risk assessment identifies what could cause harm at an event or workplace, who might be hurt, and what is being done to control those risks.
A risk assessment is a structured look at the hazards involved in a piece of work. For an ice cream van at an event, that might include vehicle movements on site, trip hazards around the van, hot weather, crowds at the hatch, allergens and cleaning chemicals. Each hazard is recorded with the controls that reduce the risk.
UK employers have a legal duty to assess risks, and event organisers usually ask each supplier for theirs so they can build an overall plan. Larger events and councils will often ask for it before confirming a supplier. We provide our risk assessments and other documents to organisers and councils on request. If your event has particular features, such as a tight access route or a school playground, tell us so the assessment reflects them.
