Notting Hill is known around the world for Portobello Road, its pastel terraces and the Carnival that fills the streets every August bank holiday weekend. Behind the famous streets are private communal gardens shared by the houses around them, small parks, schools and a steady flow of shops, galleries and studios. The events that suit an ice cream van here are garden square parties, children's birthdays, shop openings, fashion and film shoots, and school fairs.

Getting a van into place takes some thought. Many roads are residents' parking only, Portobello Road is crowded on market days, and the garden squares are usually reached through locked gates with no vehicle access. In practice we park on the street outside the gate or in a nearby bay and guests come out to us. Because the van serves on battery power, it runs with the engine off the whole time we serve, so neighbours hear no engine and the van can sit in front of a shopfront or camera without fumes.
