Leatherhead is a small town on the River Mole, where the M25 meets the road south to Dorking. The old centre is compact, with a pedestrianised high street, and the town is surrounded by villages that have their own strong identities: Fetcham, Ashtead, Great Bookham and Oxshott. There are several large independent schools nearby and a number of company headquarters, so the events calendar includes school open days and staff summer parties as well as village fetes.

A lot of the events we are asked about here take place in large private gardens or on school fields rather than in the town centre. The freezers and soft serve machine run from batteries while we serve. That means no generator and no engine idling, which matters when the van is parked beside a marquee, a cricket pavilion or a quiet residential lane in Fetcham or Bookham.

  The river runs along the west side of the town, with riverside paths towards Fetcham.
