Grays is the main town of Thurrock, on the north bank of the Thames between the Dartford Crossing and Tilbury. Its history lies in the river trade and the chalk quarries, and several of those old pits have since become nature parks and housing. Lakeside shopping centre is just to the west, the c2c line runs into Fenchurch Street, and newer neighbourhoods have spread out across Chafford Hundred and South Ockendon. Container ships and port cranes are part of the view along the river.

Thurrock has a young population, so the calendar is full of children's parties, school fairs and sports days, plus summer fun days down at Grays Beach.
