Amersham is two towns in one. Old Amersham sits in the Misbourne valley, with a broad historic High Street of coaching inns, timber-framed houses and the 17th century Market Hall. Amersham-on-the-Hill grew up around the railway station, which is the end of the Metropolitan line as well as a stop on the Chiltern Railways route into Marylebone. All around are the wooded hills, beech woods and small villages of the Chilterns.

Amersham is a quiet, well-off place where most events are private: garden parties, christenings, children's birthdays and school events, along with fetes in the surrounding villages. Large gardens with long drives are common, which suits a van, though gates and overhanging trees need checking.
