Electric ice cream van

Definition

An electric ice cream van powers its freezers and soft serve machine from batteries, so it serves without an engine or generator running.

A traditional ice cream van keeps its freezers and soft serve machine going by running a diesel engine or a generator for the whole time it is trading. An electric van does the same job from a battery, so nothing is running while it serves. There are no exhaust fumes and no engine noise at the hatch. The term is also used for fully electric vans that drive on battery power too, and these now exist, but most vans described this way, ours included, still drive on diesel.

That changes where a van can go. It can stand close to guests, near wedding speeches and school playgrounds, and into some indoor and covered venues, subject to their own access and safety rules, where an idling engine would never be allowed. Kreamy Delights runs four battery-powered ice cream vans: they drive on diesel, and the freezers and soft serve machine run on lithium batteries through an inverter, so there is no engine or generator running while we serve. They are ULEZ compliant and look the part, with two shown on our site in classic Mr. Whippy and Wall's livery, one red and one cream.
